DUCKS!

This is a little belated, I know, but we recently (May 23) added two Cayugas to our household. They will grow up to be black ducks with a greenish tinge to them. They love playing in water and they love slurping down strings of spinach. They clack their bills against your fingers as they enthusiastically gobble the greenery.

We are first timers and I'm haveing a nervous breakdown trying to take care of them.
I just posted about our chicks 30 seconds ago and to stumble upon your blog was so great!

Ella,

Thanks for your comments!

The really tiny chicks are kind of nerve-wracking, but really, they mostly take care of themselves.

You probably already know this, but we made sure that they had a heat lamp at all times early on, warming one side of the bin a little more than the other so that they could circulate back and forth from warmer to cooler as they saw fit.

If they all try and mob the same spot they are too cold. On the other hand, it is not unusual for them to lie down next to each other when sleeping.

We had one that didn't eat much at first, so we took some chick starter and made a little bit of mash with the addition of some water, and she went to town on it. That's how she came to be known "Queen of the Mash."

Gail Damerow has some excellent chicken care books out there. I have also found the feed store where we got the chickens to be a good source of advice.

Our chickens could have probably moved out sooner. It took me a while to finish the coop enough that I could see them surviving against a raccoon attack.

I love all the pics of the ducks, early on tiny and in the swim! Had any marauding 'coons or other pesky predators?
